Prescription Drug Take Back Month - April 2021

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is held on April 24, 2021 which addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers, 4.9 million people misused prescription stimulants, and 5.9 million people misused prescription tranquilizers or sedatives in 2019. The survey also showed that a majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

The DEA’s Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.

For safety, it is recommended to clean out the medicine cabinet twice annually, and residents of Marin County can participate in this month’s Prescription Drug Take Back Month in Marin. The perfect time to deposit unused and unwanted medications at one of 24 receptacles located around the county. Marin residents can also "take back" from home by ordering a mail-back envelope to be delivered to their residence. RxSafeMarin.org includes a list of locations and more information about the mail-back option.
