Fire Chief Jim Irving

Jim IrvingThank you for taking the opportunity to visit our District’s website. The Southern Marin Fire Protection District is proud to serve our community. The men and women of the Fire District take pride in providing its citizens with highest level of service possible.

The Southern Marin Fire Protection District is a modern “all risk" public safety agency, meaning we will respond to the needs of the community, regardless of the nature of the incident and begin the process of solving the problem to lead to a positive outcome.

SMFD is comprised of specialists in the areas of structural firefighting, Marine Firefighting, Hazardous Materials response, Urban Search and Rescue, Maritime Firefighting, Water Rescue, Dive Operations, Wildland Firefighting and strategic planning and command and control. Finally, every member of the SMFD is a trained Emergency Medical Technician or Nationally Accredited Paramedic. Emergency Medical Service accounts for the majority of our workload, and the SMFD places a high priority on providing pre-hospital emergency care.

I started as a volunteer firefighter in 1973, a seasonal firefighter in 1974, and my professional career in 1978 with the City of Mill Valley Fire Department. I came to the Southern Marin Fire Protection District in 1994.  During my career, I have been a firefighter, a firefighter/paramedic, paramedic captain, fire captain, battalion chief, deputy chief and today, fire chief.  I am proud to serve as Fire Chief of one of the most dynamic and well-trained fire service organizations anywhere.

It is our commitment to you that we stand ready to assist you in your time of need day or night, with compassion, professionalism, respect and dignity.
